Content-Area Reading

This collection of 10 graphic organizer-based lessons and 30 mini-assessments is designed for content-area teachers, such as career and technical education teachers, who want to infuse reading instruction and reinforcement into their course while teaching their content. Each lesson should be used repeatedly to reinforce the reading strategy it employs.

Students should initially practice the strategy using a non-intimidating text like USA TODAY. Then, they can transfer the skill to their textbook reading, aided by the graphic organizer. The teacher’s version of the graphic organizers highlights how to simply but effectively guide students in using the reading strategies and graphic organizers. The mini-assessments can be used to assess student progress and provide simple standardized test preparation.
