David Guggenheim’s documentary Waiting for Superman hits theaters this Friday. A documentary is a film that expresses an opinion supported by facts on a current, debatable issue. It relies on real people rather than actors, and real situations rather than a script. Instead, actors may appear to give their opinions on the issue, and the script is more of an outline than a word-for-word guide. With a partner, browse through USA TODAY and find an article on a debatable issue. Identify the two (or more) sides of the issue, and find 2-3 facts to support each side. Next, choose one side of the issue and write a scene from a documentary that supports that opinion. Your partner will write a scene from the other side of the issue.
