Facebook has been in the news a lot recently, both because of its privacy policies and because it has now reached over 500 million members and is a worldwide presence. Clearly, most people, including teens, love using this technology to meet social needs.

However, how could technology that is essentially built for social networking also meet other needs?

Have the entire class read an article about an existing or emerging technology centered around social networking. Then, divide the class into groups of four and assign each group a field to consider, such as business marketing, medicine, finance, job searches, humanitarian efforts or advocacy. Ask groups to brainstorm how the primarily social networking technology described in the article could be used to advance their assigned field. Share the results as a class.
