The earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12 has killed tens of thousands of people and has left 1.5 million homeless. Aid to the country is pouring in from around the world, even from unlikely places. The Dominican Republic, which borders Haiti’s eastern side, is transporting food, water, tents and medical supplies to the country. Often, the two countries are in conflict, with disputes occurring over land and the placement of the border. However, Dominicans, many of whom live in poverty, have responded generously to the Haitian people.
Look through the newspaper for an example of another unlikely alliance in politics or international affairs. Explain why the partnership is unexpected. Next, describe an unlikely partnership that you think would help solve a national or international problem. Then, discuss the factors that prevent people, groups and countries from working together for the common good. What factors promote cooperation?
