In an interview with USA TODAY last year, Yale University president Richard Levin declared, "Americans like to have ambitious targets." Begin by deciding if you agree with Levin’s statement. Then, with a partner, look through today’s paper for two examples that support Levin’s quote: one demonstrating American ambition as a positive force and one showing it as a negative one. After writing out the reasoning behind your choices, decide which of your examples — pro or con — is stronger. Now, find a pair who are supporting the opposite viewpoint and hold a brief debate. (Allow for two-minute statements and one-minute rebuttals.) When finished, decide if you still agree with Levin’s statement. Did the debate process change your mind? Why or why not?
