Historically, presidential hopefuls have had to be both politicians and entertainers. And the two major-party candidates in this year’s presidential election are no different — Obama has been "communing with Oprah and posing for Annie Leibovitz (for yet another cover of Men’s Vogue)," and McCain has been seen "grilling ribs with Rachael Ray, snarking with John Stewart and squirming on The View."* With a partner, look through USA TODAY and find an article focused on one of the candidates for president or vice president. On your own, read through it and underline examples of how he/she is acting as a politician and circle examples of how he/she is being the entertainer. Together, decide if you believe presidential candidates should be part entertainer, part politician or if they should stick to politics. Create a list of compelling reasons to support your opinion.
